5 Rookie Mistakes That Are Killing Your Game

Pickleball is easy to learn but hard to master. If you are wondering "how to get better at pickleball," start by eliminating these common errors.

1. Playing "Tennis" on a Pickleball Court

Big backswings and heavy wrist action work in tennis, but in pickleball, they lead to errors. Keep your strokes compact and short.

2. The "No-Man's Land" Trap

Beginners often get stuck in the middle of the court (the transition zone). You should either be:

  • All the way back at the baseline (serving/receiving).
  • All the way up at the Kitchen line (volleying).

Standing in the middle leaves your feet vulnerable to shots aimed at your shoelaces.

3. Rushing the Net Too Soon

After you serve, you must let the return bounce (the Two-Bounce Rule). Many beginners serve and run forward, only to get caught by a deep return. Serve, stay back, let it bounce, then move up.

4. Being a "Banger" (Smashing Everything)

Power is fun, but patience wins games. Beginners often try to smash every ball, even when it's low. This usually results in hitting the net or hitting it out. Learn to "dink" (hit soft shots) and wait for a high ball to attack.

5. Lack of Communication

In doubles, the most common error is two players watching the ball drop between them, or clashing paddles trying to hit the same shot. Develop a habit of calling "Mine!" or "Yours!" early to avoid confusion.

Fixing these habits takes practice, but having a balanced, pro-level paddle like the Xephira Professional helps stabilize your shots while you learn the strategy.
