The 3 Numbers Explained: How to Score in Pickleball

Pickleball scoring is the biggest hurdle for beginners. Unlike tennis, you don't count 15, 30, 40. Instead, you hear three numbers, like 4-2-1.

What Do the Numbers Mean?

The score is called in this order:

  1. Serving Team's Score
  2. Receiving Team's Score
  3. Server Number (1 or 2)

Example: If you say "5-3-2", it means your team has 5 points, the opponent has 3, and you are the second server on your team.

The "Side-Out" Rule

In doubles, each team gets two chances to serve (except for the very first serve of the game).

  • Server 1 serves until they lose a rally.
  • The ball goes to Server 2 (partner).
  • If Server 2 loses the rally, it is a Side-Out, and the ball goes to the opponents.

Understanding the score allows you to focus on strategy rather than math. Ready to play? Grab a Xephira Classic paddle and hit the court.
