The 16mm Obsession: A Day in the Life of Our Lead Product Designer

Where Engineering Meets Art
Meet Marcus Chen, the man who spent 14 months perfecting the internal honeycomb structure of the Xephira Pro Series. In an industry where many brands simply 'white-label' factory designs, Marcus is a rare breed: a designer who lives in the lab and breathes polymer density.
"We Don't Build Toys; We Build Instruments"
Walking through the Xephira R&D lab, you won't see finished paddles; you'll see cross-sections, stress-test machines, and microscopic scans of carbon fiber weaves. "The biggest challenge in pickleball design is the 'Sweet Spot Paradox'," Marcus explains. "If you make the core too stiff, you lose control. If it's too soft, you lose power. We went through 42 prototypes to find the 'Golden Ratio' for our Pro Series."
The Evolution of the Core
Marcus walks us through the transition from our Classic Series to the Professional Grade. "The Classic is about forgiveness—making the game fun for everyone. But the Pro Series? That's about performance. We used a proprietary polypropylene blend that absorbs the 'shock' of a hard drive while returning that energy back into the ball. It’s physics, but when you’re on the court, it feels like magic."
For Marcus, the ultimate reward isn't a sales figure; it's the sound of a perfect strike. "A Xephira paddle has a distinct 'thud'—it sounds solid because it IS solid. No hollow spots, no compromises."
