The Kitchen Manifesto: Tactical Positioning in the Non-Volley Zone
The "Kitchen," or Non-Volley Zone (NVZ), is what separates pickleball from every other racket sport. Mastering the rules of this 7-foot area is the difference between a novice and a professional strategist.
The "Standing" Myth
A common misconception is that you can never stand in the kitchen. In reality, you can stand in the NVZ at any time; you simply cannot volley the ball while touching the zone or its line. Professionals often "live" on the kitchen line, stepping in only to play a ball that has already bounced. This allows for the "Reset" shot—a defensive masterpiece that neutralizes an opponent's power and forces them into a dinking war.
