Why Running Shoes Are Dangerous for Pickleball
Share
We see it all the time at local courts: players showing up in their favorite cushy running shoes. While they might feel like clouds, they are a recipe for disaster on the pickleball court.
The Difference: Forward vs. Lateral Movement
Running shoes are engineered for one thing: moving forward. They have thick, soft heels to absorb impact and flexible mesh uppers for breathability. However, pickleball is a game of lateral (side-to-side) movement.
- The Risk: When you slide sideways to return a dink in running shoes, the high heel stack can cause your foot to roll over the edge, leading to ankle sprains.
- The Solution: Court shoes (tennis or pickleball specific) have a lower center of gravity and a wider outrigger sole to provide stability during sudden stops and starts.
Durability Matters
Pickleball courts are abrasive. The soft rubber of a running shoe will wear down in weeks. Court shoes use a durable rubber compound designed to withstand the constant friction of the hard court surface.
